It sits on the grounds of the former Middlesex County Hospital.","why_significant":"The form calls it Waltham's finest and most substantial example of Georgian vernacular architecture, with high-quality craftsmanship. It is also associated with the prominent Wellington family, who were active in civic affairs in the Trapelo Road area and Waltham in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is said to retain integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.","narrative":"This farmhouse on Trapelo Road in Waltham was built around 1779, and the form attributes it to William Wellington. It is a five-bay by three-bay clapboard building with a center entrance framed by Doric pilasters, an entablature and a full pediment. Windows have raised mouldings, cornice-headed lintels and 12/12 sash, and the low hip roof carries substantial brick chimneys. Later changes include a bay window from the late 1890s or early 1900s, a Colonial Revival porch and a rear ell. The house is described as Waltham's finest Georgian vernacular example. The Wellington family, descended from Roger Wellington, who received land in Watertown in 1636, held the farm for generations. William served as selectman for seventeen years, and the family ran inns and farmed. The family sold the property about 1903, and in 1930 the county took much of the farm for a tuberculosis hospital. The listing covers only the house and the land within 25 feet of it. The house retains its rural setting of mature trees and an old stone wall.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by William Wellington according to Sanderson","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition good; occupied as the residence of the Superintendent of the Middlesex County Sanatorium.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.254546-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/7916/63791668/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001512.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001512/5fcc05d797-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001512/5fcc05d797-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Midnightdreary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WellingtonHouseWaltham.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Midnightdreary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WellingtonHouseWaltham.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791668","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Wellington_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716044"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/wellington-william-house-89001512/"}
