It shows the long presence of the Wellington family in the area and the continuation of agricultural activity into the 20th century. It is also a restrained example of early 20th century Queen Anne vernacular architecture.","narrative":"Built around 1902 by Charles Lowell Wellington, this house at 685 Trapelo Road in Waltham is a modest example of early 20th century Queen Anne vernacular design. It is a wood-framed, two-story, side-hall plan house with clapboard siding, a rubblestone foundation and a broad gable roof. Details include a front porch with slat-work railing and square posts, one-over-one wood sash windows, narrow cornerboards and an octagonal bay on the west wall. A 1-1/2-story stable with a cupola abuts the northeast corner, and a stone wall and mature trees keep some of the area's earlier rural character. The house matters as one of the last built along Trapelo Road before suburban development and as a link to the Wellington family, who had settled in the area by the early 1700s. Charles Wellington sold it around 1915, and Ervin Castner, who married into the family, bought it in 1918. It remained in the Castner family afterward.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by Charles Lowell Wellington","architectural_style":"Queen Anne Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Recorded in good condition and used as a private residence; a west-side porch was removed in the late 1920s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.44557-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/15/7918/63791815/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001511.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001511/c6be400d09-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001511/c6be400d09-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_WellingtonCastnerHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_WellingtonCastnerHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791815","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington%E2%80%93Castner_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7981311"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/wellington-castner-house-89001511/"}
