It combines late Federal form with Italianate details such as a deep cornice, segmental-arch attic windows and a steeply pitched gable roof. It was long the home of Leonard W. Stanley, a policeman, and meets criterion C.","narrative":"Built around 1855-1856, this two-story clapboard house at 23-25 Taylor Street sits on a rise in Waltham's South Side, bordered on three sides by a rubblestone retaining wall. At first glance it resembles a center-hall Federal farmhouse, but a deep cornice, segmental-arch attic windows and a steeply pitched gable roof with return eaves reveal Italianate influence. It rests on a low granite-block foundation, and its windows hold 6/6 wood sash. The plan is U-shaped, with a western ell from about the 1870s and an eastern ell added after 1886. Deed research shows that Ebenezer D. Gordon, a manufacturer, sold the lot to Leonard W. Stanley, a policeman, in September 1855 for $450. In 1854 only Pine, Taylor and Cushing Streets lay east of Moody Street, which makes this one of the oldest buildings in that area. The house was listed for its unusual blend of late Federal and Italianate design and for its architectural integrity.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Federal/Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and in use as a private residence, as originally.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.44301-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/60/7910/63791060/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001509.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001509/9145c52e8a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001509/9145c52e8a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_LeonardWStanleyHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_LeonardWStanleyHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791060","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_W._Stanley_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6525818"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/stanley-leonard-w-house-89001509/"}
