It was probably built by or for the Harrington family around the late 1730s.","why_significant":"The house is a relatively rare Waltham example of a mid-18th century Georgian farmhouse. Its lean-to ell and attached stable show how a farmhouse changed over time. It was owned by Harrington descendants for nearly 250 years and apparently served as an inn around 1803-1807, linking it to Waltham's pre-railroad stagecoach era.","narrative":"Set at an angle to a sweeping curve of South Street in Waltham and shaded by old trees, this farmhouse dates to the late 1730s. It is a five-bay, center-entrance Georgian building with a substantial brick chimney, feather-edged clapboards, a narrow architrave around the windows, and cornice returns on the end gables. A lean-to from the late 1700s or early 1800s, a side ell and an attached stable show how the house grew over time. The land came to the Harrington family in 1684, and the house was probably built by or for Captain Samuel Harrington, a gentleman farmer and selectman. Descendants owned it for nearly 250 years. Around 1803-1807 it apparently operated as an inn, well placed on a road leading to the Great Road, the main highway west from Boston. It is one of the few Waltham buildings tied to the town's stagecoach days, and a rare local example of mid-18th century Georgian farmhouse design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; probably built by Captain Samuel Harrington","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and in use as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.80561-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/66/7916/63791666/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001508.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001508/5193ebdf59-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001508/5193ebdf59-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_SamuelHarringtonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_SamuelHarringtonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791666","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Harrington_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7411633"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/harrington-samuel-house-89001508/"}
