It is now used as the Arthur J. Clark Community Workshop.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the school is an important part of Waltham's turn-of-the-century building campaign and reflects the rapid growth of the South Side. It is named for Royal E. Robbins, long-time treasurer of the American Waltham Watch Company. It is also a well executed, little-altered example of a period school in the Georgian Revival style.","narrative":"Built in 1901 on Waltham's South Side, the Royal E. Robbins School at 58 Chestnut Street is a rectangular brick building with limestone trim, designed in a restrained Georgian Revival manner and possibly by Samuel Patch. The main facade has a recessed three-bay center between projecting wings, and the entrance sits in a recessed area framed by fine mouldings, a dentil course and a cornice-headed lintel. A low hip roof with two tall chimneys crowns the structure. The city appropriated $30,000 for a new primary school in 1900, and an eight-room building opened in 1901. It was named for Royal Elisha Robbins, for 45 years treasurer of the American Waltham Watch Company and a leading figure in its success. The school reflects the neighborhood's rapid growth in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the city's turn-of-the-century school construction. Alterations are few, mainly a brick stairwell and replacement windows and doors. It later housed special classes, a library branch, and a community workshop.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"possibly Samuel Patch","architectural_style":"Georgian Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; present use is the Arthur J. Clark Community Workshop. Earlier used for special classes of ungraded elementary children and, in the 1960s, as a branch of the Waltham Public Library.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.482635-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/7916/63791656/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001496.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001496/59b7db9bcf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001496/59b7db9bcf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waltham_MA_Royal_E_Robbins_School.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waltham_MA_Royal_E_Robbins_School.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791656","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_E._Robbins_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7374128"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/robbins-royal-e-school-89001496/"}
