Sybbill Banks, on an L-plan with a gable roof.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an unusually well-detailed and well-preserved vernacular example of the Queen Anne style. It was among the first of several Queen Anne and turn-of-the-century homes built in the Appleton Street area. It was built for a single working woman of some repute, the daughter of Civil War figure Colonel Nathaniel P. Banks.","narrative":"Built in 1892 at 27 Appleton Street in Waltham, this L-plan house rises two and a half stories to a gable roof and shows the vernacular Queen Anne style in clear detail. Walls are clapboard, with patterned shingles in the gable fields. A verandah with spindle valance, balustrade and turned posts runs across the facade and around the south side, and a pediment with a sunburst detail marks the entry. Modified palladian windows light the gable fields, and the north side has stairway windows and an oculus. It was built for E. Sybbill Banks, daughter of Colonel Nathaniel P. Banks, a Civil War and local hero. Banks was a single woman, active in Waltham amateur theatre, who taught elocution and worked in post offices, becoming one of the first women pensioned by the federal government. She sold the house in 1910 to a mechanical engineer, and his daughters' trust held it until 1984. Few occupants have lived there, so many original finishes survive. It was among the first houses built in the Appleton Street area.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good; present use is dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.844513-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/7911/63791188/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001488.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001488/a88217680f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001488/a88217680f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_ESybbillBanksHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_ESybbillBanksHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791188","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._Sybbill_Banks_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5322156"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/banks-e-sybbill-house-89001488/"}
