It sits on a prominent corner lot of about 0.23 acre.","why_significant":"The house is described as Waltham's best example of the Stick Style and a very rare surviving boarding house built for Waltham Watch Company employees. It is the only watch-factory boarding house to retain its integrity of form and materials. The deed restrictions the company placed on the lot show how it sought to control land use near its factory.","narrative":"Built around 1880 at 107 Adams Street in Waltham, this clapboard lodging house was constructed for workers of the American Waltham Watch Company. It is regarded as the city's best example of the Stick Style, with an irregular plan, a broad end-wall gable, a side-entrance porch with chamfered posts and spool-work transom, an octagonal bay, and decorative barge boards on a steeply pitched roof. The watch company sold the lot to Charles Baker in 1868 with strict deed conditions. These barred many trades and noxious uses, limited the building setback, and required that the owner be a native-born United States citizen for twenty years. Baker worked at the watch company and lived in the house until at least 1912. The present configuration appears on an 1886 map. It is one of very few surviving watch-factory boarding houses and the only one with its form and materials intact. It remains a lodging house today.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown","architectural_style":"Stick Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition with no major alterations and still operated as a lodging house.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.850852-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/25/7922/63792225/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001484.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001484/d58461cc88-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001484/d58461cc88-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_CharlesBakerHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_CharlesBakerHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792225","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Baker_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5075384"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/baker-charles-house-89001484/"}
