It sits at the Spruce Street and Adams Street intersection on the city's South Side.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a physical link to the South Side's last intensive phase of multi-family residential development in the late 1890s. It is also described as a rare, well-detailed and well-preserved Colonial Revival double triple-decker, as fine as any in the Boston area.","narrative":"Built in 1897 at 4 Adams Street in Waltham, The Oxford is a six-family house of the type known as a double triple-decker. It rises three floors from a boulder-stone foundation to a flat roof with a dentillated, modillioned cornice and swag ornament. Clapboards survive, and the main facade has a pair of bow fronts flanking an entrance bay with a Tuscan-columned porch, original door enframements, sidelights and a Palladian window above. Windows retain 2/2 wood sash. The lot was once part of Charles Wooley's house lot, later sold through several owners to Eugene H. Smith in 1894, and Water Department records show completion in 1897. The building reflects the final turn-of-the-century burst of dense housing on the South Side, when the American Watch Company was making its last plant expansion. Few three-decker buildings exist in Waltham, and this one is notable for its form, craftsmanship and exterior detail. It remains in multi-family use and in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is good, with no major alterations recorded; it is still used as multi-family housing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.844-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/70/7915/63791570/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001483.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001483/6ba4a9456b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001483/6ba4a9456b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waltham_MA_The_Oxford.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waltham_MA_The_Oxford.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791570","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Oxford_(Waltham,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7755781"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/oxford-the-89001483/"}
