It is notable for its four-over-four plan, gambrel roof and sophisticated Greek Revival elements. It is also one of very few farmhouses of its period in the area to remain largely unaltered.","narrative":"Built in 1840 for farmer and stock raiser William Edwards, this brick farmhouse sits in the northeast corner of Newtown, Ohio, on land once part of a 198-acre home farm. The 2-1/2 story main block has Flemish bond brick on the front, a five-bay facade with a sidelit entrance, a slightly gambrel roof and paired chimneys at each end. A rear ell holds a summer kitchen, and a small brick outbuilding served as wash house and smokehouse. Inside, a central hall has a curving staircase, original floorboards and woodwork, and large marble mantels. A county history of 1881 called it a mansion, and it was considered the showplace of the area. A 1985 and 1988 survey found fifteen houses of the period in Newtown, most heavily altered. This house changed little beyond a c. 1890 gable peak, which is why it was recognized for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1840-1887","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic use was a single dwelling; current functions are listed as hotel and specialty store. The exterior is intact apart from a c. 1890 gable peak.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.115797-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/89001455.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001455/8f9d5d5e9c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001455/8f9d5d5e9c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Edwards_Farmhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Edwards_Farmhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988907","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Edwards_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8008482"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/edwards-william-farmhouse-89001455/"}
