It is also an excellent example of Italianate architecture showing Porter's signature elements. It has suffered few changes and retains integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1861, this frame Italianate house at 240 College Street in Hudson, Ohio, was the personal residence of architect Orin Porter. It sits on a wooded, secluded lot off a private lane, on part of a former fourteen-acre tract. The house has a cross-shaped plan, a two-story hip-roofed center section and a gabled central projection with brackets, a bullseye window, twin arched windows and a pedimented entrance hood. Inside, a curved walnut banister and original poplar floors survive. Porter, youngest son of builder Lemuel Porter, trained under his brother Simeon and lived here until his death in 1871. The house replaced an earlier Simeon Porter house lost to fire. Its low front gable, long returns, brackets and arched windows echo features of his other work, such as 230 Aurora Street. It is recognized for its link to a family of master builders and as a well-preserved Italianate example with few alterations.","period_of_significance":"1861-1871","architect_builder":"Orin Porter","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; described as well maintained and retaining integrity of design and setting. The garage has been modernized as an artist's studio.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.157084-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/89001449.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001449/5b2d146d24-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001449/5b2d146d24-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ORIN_PORTER_HOUSE_SUMMIT_COUNTY,_OHIO.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"89001452","name":"Hudson Historic District (Boundary Increase)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/hudson-historic-district-boundary-increase-89001452/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986234","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138748718"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/summit-county/porter-orin-house-89001449/"}
