It retains integrity of design, location, materials, feeling and association, and is significant at the local level under Criterion C.","narrative":"Built around 1850, this farmhouse at 47-49 Spear Street in Quincy is one of the oldest houses on its street and one of the city's few intact nineteenth-century farmhouses. It follows a vernacular central-hall plan with minimal ornament, a granite foundation, a gable roof, twin rear wall chimneys and regular six-over-six sash windows. Projecting gable returns, sidelights at the entrance and simple corner pilasters point to its mid-century date. A two-story rear extension appears on the 1876 atlas, and pedimented porticos were added in the 1890s. Granite wall remnants and driveway posts survive at the front of the lot. Seth Spear (1801-1888) owned the property from the early 1850s until his death and ran one of the largest farms near Quincy Center, stretching from Wibird Street to Coddington Street. His daughter bought the homestead from his estate in 1888. The house later became a two-family dwelling and is in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built either by Thomas Drake shortly before 1850 or by Seth Spear shortly after","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; currently a two-family dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.522566-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/7924/63792439/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001375.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001375/2e373553ba-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001375/2e373553ba-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seth_Spear_Homestead_Quincy_MA_01.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seth_Spear_Homestead_Quincy_MA_01.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792439","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seth_Spear_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7456607"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/spear-seth-homestead-89001375/"}
