It retains integrity of design, location, materials, feeling and association, and meets Criterion C at the local level. It is also one of the oldest houses in its neighborhood near Quincy Center.","narrative":"Newcomb Place, at 109 Putnam Street in Quincy, is a Greek Revival house built around the 1850s on land once part of the Edmund Quincy farm. It was already standing when Ebenezer Woodward bought the property in 1856. He sold it in 1857 to Ann Francis Fowle, who married Joseph W. Newcomb, a painter, and the house was known as Newcomb Place until 1895. Later owners included William P. Barker, a partner in a leading Quincy granite firm, and the Follet family, who lived there into the early 1940s. Architecturally, it is described as the finest intact two-and-a-half story sidehall plan Greek Revival residence in the city. Features include a three-bay facade with a closed pediment, a side entrance, six-over-six windows with simple lintels, a wrapped cornice board and plain corner posts. A glass entrance and side bay window from the 1930s and a 1965 rear wing are considered sympathetic. A picket fence and a shed do not contribute.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good; in use as a single family dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.858845-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7924/63792435/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001368.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001368/8e0edc78a9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001368/8e0edc78a9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newcomb_Place_Quincy_MA_01.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newcomb_Place_Quincy_MA_01.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792435","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcomb_Place","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715770"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/newcomb-place-89001368/"}
