It is described as one of the finest intact examples of the 'Quincy Cottage,' a vernacular house type once common in the city. It meets Criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"This two-family house at 23-25 Prout Street in west Quincy dates from about the 1880s. Barnabas Clarke, an investor in the granite industry, built it as part of a small subdivision he platted in the 1870s on land once known as Bass' Common. Clarke rented the houses to workers from the nearby quarries. In 1907 he sold this property to another investor, Theophilus King. Architecturally, the building is a 'Quincy Cottage,' a one-and-a-half story, gable-roofed rectangular block with a projecting central entrance and twin dormers. This example has shed-roofed dormers, walls of saw-toothed shingles and clapboards, Greek Revival style pilasters framing the main block, and brackets under the eaves. It has no outbuildings and no recorded major alterations, and its condition is good. It was listed for its association with granite-industry workers' housing and as one of the best preserved examples of a once-common local house type.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Barnabas Clarke (builder); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Quincy Cottage","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition good; no major alterations; in use as a single family dwelling at the time of the survey.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.67831-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/82/7926/63792682/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001367.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001367/8f854db9a8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001367/8f854db9a8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sswonk","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_23-25_Prout_Street.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Sswonk</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_23-25_Prout_Street.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792682","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_23%E2%80%9325_Prout_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914154"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/house-at-23-25-prout-street-89001367/"}
