It retains integrity of design, location, materials, feeling and association. It also reflects a succession of prominent Quincy owners.","narrative":"Built around the 1860s at 248 President's Lane in Quincy, this wood-clapboard Italianate house sits on a spacious lot at the edge of President's Hill. It was built for Charles Marsh, a Boston leather dealer who served as president of the Granite Trust Company and later the Quincy Savings Bank. Later owners included A.D. Chase and his son Richard, an insurance firm founder, and Luther S. Anderson, manager of the Granite Railway Company. The house is a two-and-a-half story sidehall plan, a form uncommon in Quincy, with its gable end facing the street. Double brackets support the return eaves, an arched window sits within the gable, and the entrance porch has chamfered posts, scrolled brackets and a dentiled frieze. A bracketed angular bay projects from the side, and the foundation is granite. Described as one of two well-preserved examples of its type in the city, it has seen no major alterations and was listed for its architecture at the local level.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; in use as a single-family dwelling, with no major alterations and a noncontributing 1930s two-car garage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.615915-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/7924/63792453/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001366.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001366/14be3d3d29-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001366/14be3d3d29-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Marsh_House_Site_Quincy_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Marsh_House_Site_Quincy_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792453","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Marsh_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5080675"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/marsh-charles-house-89001366/"}
