Dicey.","why_significant":"The house is described as one of Quincy's best preserved examples of a modest-scale Craftsman Bungalow. It also represents the small suburban houses built in North Quincy's residential subdivisions in the early twentieth century. It retains integrity of design, location, materials, feeling, workmanship and association.","narrative":"This one-and-a-half story house at 56 Pope Street in North Quincy was built in 1918 by contractor Russell M. Dicey at a cost of $3,000. It sits in the Montclair neighborhood, on land that was once the Micah Pope farm. Developers subdivided the farm in the late nineteenth century, encouraged by the arrival of the Old Colony Railroad in 1845 and the street railway in 1888. Most of Montclair's modest suburban houses were built in the first two decades of the twentieth century. The house is a well-preserved example of the Craftsman Bungalow style. Its features include a gabled front porch on a fieldstone base, heavy tapered short posts, shaped brackets under overhanging eaves, a low-pitched gabled roof, and wood shingles laid in alternating wide and narrow rows. It has had no major alterations. A garage at the rear is noncontributing. The house was judged significant locally for its architecture and its link to North Quincy's early residential development.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Russell M.
