It retains its integrity and reflects the late nineteenth-century development of affluent neighborhoods for local businessmen, civic leaders and Boston commuters.","narrative":"Built in the 1890s on the slope of President's Hill in Quincy, this single-family house at 148 Monroe Road is an example of the Queen Anne style. The frame house has shingled upper stories, a complex gable roof, multiple gables and dormers, irregular window placement and a granite foundation. A fieldstone porch wraps around two sides, and the fieldstone first story is rare in Quincy. A one-story entrance porch was added in 1907. The house was home to William R. Bateman, a Boston wool broker, whose family lived there until 1927. A 1903 real estate brochure called it his spacious artistic residence. President's Hill was developed after the Charles Francis Adams estate was divided in the 1890s, creating an elite neighborhood near Quincy Center and the railroad depot. The house is described as the finest Queen Anne residence on the hill and one of the best preserved in Quincy. It was listed for its architecture and its link to that development.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and in use as a single-family dwelling; it has not been moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.877693-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/92/7925/63792592/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001359.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001359/c69e935422-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001359/c69e935422-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_R._Bateman_House_Quincy_MA_01.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_R._Bateman_House_Quincy_MA_01.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792592","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_R._Bateman_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8017174"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/bateman-william-r-house-89001359/"}
