It retains integrity of design, location, materials, feeling and association, and is cited under Criteria A and C. It kept its Federal identity despite reuse as an inn and as offices.","narrative":"Standing on a corner lot ringed on three sides by the Town Brook, this Federal style mansion at 36 Miller Stile Road in Quincy was built by Edward Miller, a Revolutionary War major and grandson of the first rector of Christ Church. The two-and-a-half story, five-bay, hip-roofed house has a columnar full-width porch facing the brook, a central entrance with an elliptical fanlight and tracery sidelights, and slender, finely detailed columns. A large two-story wing was added in the late 1890s. In 1912 Henry Munroe Faxon restored the house as the Miller Stile Inn and added a cottage development designed by Boston architects and a landscape architect. The inn became a roominghouse after World War II, and the South Shore Chamber of Commerce bought the property in 1960 for offices. The house is considered one of two surviving elaborate Federal houses in Quincy and retains its original character despite these later uses.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by Edward Miller","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; in 1960 the property became offices of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, and the form lists present use as offices.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.450471-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/14/7924/63792414/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001358.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001358/d577632aa3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001358/d577632aa3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sswonk","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_Miller_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Sswonk</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_Miller_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792414","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Miller_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5344466"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/miller-edward-house-89001358/"}
