The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is considered one of the best-preserved examples of a modest, vernacular Greek Revival residence, a type once common in Quincy in the mid-nineteenth century. It keeps its integrity of design, location, materials, feeling and association. It also reflects a neighborhood tied to the growth of the granite industry and to the Marsh family.","narrative":"Number 17 Marsh Street in southwest Quincy is a modest Greek Revival house built around 1851 for Edwin Wilson Marsh, grandson of Wilson Marsh, whose coach lace business operated from the federal period house at the corner of Marsh and Quarry Streets. The house remained in the Marsh family for more than seventy years before passing in the 1920s to the Emery family. It is a simple five-bay, gable-roofed building with bold corner pilasters and wide gable returns. A bracketed door surround was added later in the Italianate manner, probably in the 1860s or 1870s, and a one-story rear ell was added by 1876. A 1929 one-car garage does not contribute to the property's character. The house is regarded as a well-preserved example of the vernacular cottages that Quincy builders produced in the mid-nineteenth century. It sits in a neighborhood of modest homes built between 1850 and 1890 as the granite industry expanded.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; present use is a single family dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.858725-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/7924/63792433/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001356.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001356/cdeba1033f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001356/cdeba1033f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sswonk","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edwin_W._Marsh_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Sswonk</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edwin_W._Marsh_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792433","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_W._Marsh_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5346890"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/marsh-edwin-w-house-89001356/"}
