It is among the most elaborate of several well-detailed Colonial Revival houses built in Quincy in that decade. It was designed by a locally known architect and retains its integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1923 at 354 Highland Avenue in Quincy, Massachusetts, this large single-family house was designed in the Colonial Revival style by Boston architect William Chapman, who had earlier designed several public buildings and residences in the city. It was built for Alfred H. Richards, vice-president of the Wollaston Cooperative Bank. The wood-clapboard house has a rectangular plan, a symmetrical five-bay facade, a central pedimented portico, dormers and slightly recessed wings. Dentils and modillions run under the eaves, and gable-roofed dormers with balustrades sit over each wing. Its proportions are closer to 18th-century models than many late 19th-century examples of the style. The house stands in Wollaston Heights, a neighborhood developed mainly between 1869 and 1900 for affluent businessmen and Boston commuters. As one of the few houses built there in the 1920s, it marks the last wave of substantial building on Wollaston Hill. It retains its original design and materials and is in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"William Chapman","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good, with no major alterations; it is in use as a single-family dwelling, with a noncontributing frame garage (1923).","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.826433-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/7925/63792550/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001353.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001353/4a29cd373c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001353/4a29cd373c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alfred_H_Richards_House_Quincy_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alfred_H_Richards_House_Quincy_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792550","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_H._Richards_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4722772"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/richards-alfred-h-house-89001353/"}
