It is also the only well-preserved survivor of several substantial suburban houses that once lined Hancock Street, and it contributes to the streetscape.","narrative":"Winfield House, at 853 Hancock Street in Quincy's Wollaston neighborhood, is a large Queen Anne house built about 1880 by John C. Chamberlin, a hardware commercial traveler. Its angled facade is crowned by an onion dome, an unusual feature in Quincy, and it also has varied window shapes, a complex roof, an overhanging gable bracket and a porch with turned posts and fan-motif brackets. Later owners included the Penniman family, leather merchants, and the Deanes, granite cutters. By 1937 Winfield L. Strout owned it, and his family ran a restaurant there until 1987. A one-story rear addition dates from the mid-20th century, and an original barn survives behind the house, while a 1930s diner at the front does not contribute. The house was recognized as one of Quincy's most exuberant and best-preserved Queen Anne buildings, and as the only well-preserved survivor of the substantial suburban houses once built along Hancock Street.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Built by John C. Chamberlin; architect unknown","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is listed as good. The house was used as a restaurant and gift shop; the Strout family restaurant operated there until summer 1987.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.943401-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/61/7924/63792461/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001347.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001347/349cc63c55-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001347/349cc63c55-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Winfield_House_Site_Quincy_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Winfield_House_Site_Quincy_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792461","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winfield_House_(Quincy,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8024999"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/winfield-house-89001347/"}
