The Nightengale family settled the area in the 18th century and farmed several properties nearby. The house stayed in the family until the 1920s, when a carpenter, John Lehto, owned it. It sits on a low granite foundation under a ridge roof with a large chimney. A porticoed entrance with two fluted Doric columns, a pedimented roof and leaded sidelights was added in the late 19th century, at the start of the Colonial Revival era. A one-story rear ell was added by 1888, and granite posts at the driveway are counted as contributing. It is the oldest house on a street now dominated by a school. It was listed for its link to agricultural development in the Federal period and as one of three well-preserved Capes built in Quincy before 1850.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Solomon Nightengale (builder); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Federal (three-quarter Cape)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is listed as good; it is in present use as a single-family dwelling and has not been moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.183605-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/12/7924/63792412/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001342.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001342/75723be841-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001342/75723be841-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Question_Solomon_Nightengale_House_Quincy_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Question_Solomon_Nightengale_House_Quincy_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792412","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_Nightengale_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7558716"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/nightengale-solomon-house-89001342/"}
