It also reflects the growth of Quincy's first affluent suburban neighborhood, built for businessmen, civic leaders and Boston commuters. Its builder served as Quincy's Commissioner of Public Works from 1901 to 1911.","narrative":"Built around 1900 for Randolph Bainbridge, who later served as Quincy's Commissioner of Public Works from 1901 to 1911, this single-family house stands near the top of Wollaston Hill on Grandview Avenue. It is a Shingle Style dwelling with wood shingles covering the walls and massive two-story cross gambrel roofs borrowed from Colonial Revival design. A simple one-story columnar porch fronts the main facade, and each gable has a Palladian window. The house is regarded as the best example of this gambrel-roofed Shingle Style type in Wollaston Heights. The neighborhood was marketed from 1869 by the Wollaston Land Associates as a status community for affluent Quincy businessmen and Boston commuters, helped by free railroad passes for lot buyers. Most of its houses were built by 1900. Later owners included John B. Buchanan, a Boston editor, in the 1910s and 1920s. The house retains its original design, materials and setting, and a later garage is the only noncontributing element.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by Randolph Bainbridge","architectural_style":"Shingle Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is a single-family dwelling, in good condition, with no major alterations; a 1930s one-car garage at the rear is noncontributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.593826-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/12/7926/63792612/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001340.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001340/7b4f4d9639-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001340/7b4f4d9639-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Randolph_Bainbridge_House_Quincy_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Randolph_Bainbridge_House_Quincy_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792612","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randolph_Bainbridge_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7291787"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/bainbridge-randolph-house-89001340/"}
