It was built by David L. Jewell and has a period garage outbuilding.","why_significant":"The house is a highly detailed example of Shingle Style architecture that incorporates Queen Anne elements, and it is among the most elaborate houses in Wollaston Heights. It retains its integrity and reflects the development of Quincy's first affluent residential community for Boston commuters.","narrative":"Built in 1887 at 48 Grandview Avenue in Quincy, this wood-shingled house stands in Wollaston Heights, a neighborhood developed in the late nineteenth century for affluent Quincy businessmen and Boston commuters. David L. Jewell, a mill agent representing Suncook, New Hampshire, built it, and his family lived there until 1930. The design combines Queen Anne and Shingle Style elements. A domed round tower reflects the Queen Anne mode, while the dominant front gable sloping to the first story reflects the Shingle Style. The most striking feature is the wide variety of shingle patterns used on the gables and tower, along with rectangular, square, arched and round windows. An inset plaque with a carved radiating sun adorns the end gable. A period outbuilding, now a garage, survives at the rear and is one of a handful of such structures remaining in Quincy. The house is recognized locally for its architecture and its link to the suburb's growth around the railroad.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by David L.
