It is a wood-clapboard building, now used as a three-family dwelling.","why_significant":"The house is one of the few remaining reminders of Quincy's earliest settlement as a region of large farms, and the Glover family owned it for generations. Architecturally, it is one of the few Federal houses in Quincy whose exterior has not undergone damaging changes. It retains integrity of design, materials, location, feeling and association.","narrative":"Built around 1798, this wood-clapboard farmhouse at 249 East Squantum Street in North Quincy's Atlantic neighborhood is a rare surviving example of the Federal-period farmhouses that once characterized the area. It was built by a member of the Glover family, probably Elisha, Ebenezer or Benjamin Wadsworth Glover, on land from a 400-acre grant that John Glover purchased in the mid-eighteenth century. The Glover farm once covered what are now the Atlantic and Montclair neighborhoods, and the family kept the house for generations. The building has a compact rectangular form, a large central chimney, a five-bay symmetrical facade, a low granite foundation and second-floor windows set tight under the eaves. Before 1888 the owners added a two-story rear wing, Greek Revival porticos and a Greek Revival entrance with fluted pilasters. Because it has avoided damaging exterior changes, it was recognized for its architecture and for its link to Quincy's early settlement. It now serves as a three-family home.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by Elisha or Ebenezer Glover or by Benjamin Wadsworth Glover","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; present use is a three-family dwelling, originally a single-family dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.857241-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/62/7925/63792562/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001328.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001328/9ec76eed28-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001328/9ec76eed28-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glover_House_Quincy_MA_01.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glover_House_Quincy_MA_01.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792562","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glover_House_(Quincy,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5572169"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/glover-house-89001328/"}
