Nelson, this wood-shingled Craftsman bungalow at 4 Brunswick Street sits in Squantum, Quincy. Nelson was one of the developers who subdivided old Squantum farms once owned by Edmund Pope, Captain James Hutchins, and the Titus family, and he and C.E. Carlson were the primary developers of the Hutchins farm. The electric street railway arrived in 1897 and encouraged lot platting, with most building taking place between 1907 and 1923. Summer houses like this one were mostly converted to year-round use by 1920, and the Nelson family stayed until 1935. The house is notable for its full-width front porch under the lower slope of the ridge roof, a low front shed dormer, wide bracketed eaves over the side gables, and porch posts of scored cast stone made to resemble granite blocks. Windows are irregularly arranged. It is considered among the best-preserved bungalows in the area and retains its original character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Craftsman Bungalow","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently a single-family dwelling in excellent condition, with no major alterations and no outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.839116-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/58/7925/63792558/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001321.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001321/4bf51f74b0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001321/4bf51f74b0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_R._Nelson_House_Quincy_MA_01.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_R._Nelson_House_Quincy_MA_01.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792558","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_R._Nelson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6253953"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/nelson-john-r-house-89001321/"}
