The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be one of the best-preserved Colonial Revival houses built on President's Hill in the early twentieth century, with fine Georgian details. It is also tied to the development of Quincy's affluent residential neighborhoods around 1900, when local businessmen, civic leaders and Boston commuters settled there. It meets Criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built about 1902 at 11 Avon Way in Quincy, Massachusetts, this wood-shingled Colonial Revival house was erected by Frank W. Crane and his wife Jennie. Crane was a partner in F.H. Crane and Sons, dealers in hay, grain and flour, and the family lived here through the 1930s. The house sits on President's Hill, an area developed in the 1890s after the division of the Charles Francis Adams estate as an elite neighborhood for businessmen, civic leaders and Boston commuters. Its symmetrical three-bay facade features a central portico, a full-width porch, vase-shaped balusters, double Doric columns, urn-shaped finials and a Federal-style door with an elliptical fanlight and sidelights. A steep hip roof with hip dormers, corner pilasters and a wide cornice board complete the design. It is considered one of the best-preserved Colonial Revival houses on the hill and keeps its original design, materials and setting.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is a single-family dwelling; condition described as excellent, with no major alterations, no outbuildings, and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.044258-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/7925/63792538/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001312.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001312/fa5c44e8b2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001312/fa5c44e8b2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frank_W._Crane_House_Quincy_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frank_W._Crane_House_Quincy_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792538","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_W._Crane_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5490135"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/crane-frank-w-house-89001312/"}
