A carriage house from the 1880s stands behind it.","why_significant":"The house is described as the most elaborately articulated Stick Style house in Quincy, a style of which only a handful of examples survive in the city. It is also associated with the prominent families who developed Adams Street as an area of residential estates in the later nineteenth century. It retains integrity of design, location, materials, feeling and association.","narrative":"Built in the late 1870s, this house at 284 Adams Street in Quincy appears to have been put up by Timothy Reed, a prosperous Boston leather merchant. Reed's family lived there until about 1915, when it passed to Boston broker Walter E. Burke and later to his son Royden. The clapboard house is considered the most elaborate Stick Style building in Quincy, where only a handful of such houses survive. Its features include a steep, complex roof, asymmetrical massing, projecting window hoods, clipped gables with bargeboards, bands of vertical boards set against horizontal clapboards, bracketed eaves, a large one-story bay window and a richly bracketed entrance porch. Behind it stands a carriage house, probably from the 1880s, one of few remaining on the large nineteenth-century estates along Adams Street. The property is listed for its architecture and for its link to the prominent families who made Adams Street a district of residential estates. It remains a single-family home in good condition with no major alterations.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; appears to have been built by Timothy Reed","architectural_style":"Stick Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is single family dwelling; condition described as good, with no major alterations and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.039972-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/32/7926/63792632/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001311.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001311/e30d920628-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001311/e30d920628-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Timothy_Reed_House_Quincy_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Timothy_Reed_House_Quincy_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792632","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Reed_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7807481"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/reed-timothy-house-89001311/"}
