It sits on a hill above Adams Street on a lot of about 39,324 square feet.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is the most elaborately articulated example of Colonial Revival architecture of its period in Quincy. It retains integrity of design, materials, feeling, location and association with the city's 1930s suburban development. It qualifies under Criterion C at the local level.","narrative":"Set on a hill above Adams Street in Quincy, this house began as an 1880 residence built for Job Franklin Faxon, a Boston flour merchant. In 1931 his nephew, Henry Munroe Faxon, a prominent Quincy real estate developer, had it remodelled for his son Robert. The Boston architects Shepard and Stearns wrapped the older building in an elaborate Colonial Revival envelope drawing on Georgian detail. Features include a large modillioned gable with an oculus, a projecting pavilion with a Palladian window and balcony above a recessed pilastered entrance, Ionic corner pilasters, and a balustrade around the hipped roof. The rear has dormers with alternating pediments and a Doric portico with decorative swags. An oriel window on the side survives from the original construction. The 1931 work coincided with the subdivision of nearby estates into large suburban houses. The nomination considers it the most elaborate Colonial Revival example of its period in Quincy.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Shephard and Stearns (1931 renovation; also spelled Shepard and Stearns, of Boston)","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is stated as good; the property has not been moved and has no outbuildings.
