It sits on the south side of Washington Street, southwest of Union Square.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a well-detailed Italianate dwelling that retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship. It is one of the few surviving mid-19th century houses on Washington Street in the Ward II area. It illustrates the elegant dwellings that once lined the street.","narrative":"This two and one-half story house at 384 Washington Street in Somerville was built around 1860 in the Italianate style. The architect is unknown. It stands on the south side of Washington Street, southwest of Union Square, in an area of mixed residential and industrial buildings. Surviving ornament includes wide corner pilasters, a paired bracketed cornice, a flush board gable end, and a central oculus framed by a carved wood garland. A full-length gable-end porch has trusses and brackets. The house was listed for its architecture at the local level. It is one of the few mid-19th century houses left on Washington Street in the Ward II area, and it shows the type of elegant home that once lined the street. Proximity to Cambridge and to transportation made the stretch between Union Square and Kirkland Street a good location for substantial residences. The late 1860s owner was Charles Schuebeler, a jeweler. Asphalt shingles were added in the mid 1900s.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as fair.
