The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is a well-detailed example of Second Empire design and is typical of homes built on Prospect Hill for businessmen and professionals who commuted to Boston. It was one of the first houses in the Columbus and Warren Street subdivision. Its mansard-roofed stable is one of the few in Somerville to keep its original surfaces and details.","narrative":"This clapboard house at 30 Warren Avenue sits on a hill in northeast Somerville's Prospect Hill neighborhood. Dated variously from 1871-1873 to 1874, it is a Second Empire dwelling two bays wide and two and a half stories tall, with a full-height polygonal bay on the main facade. It keeps its patterned slate roof, paired and single brackets, window hoods, a flat-roofed bracketed porch and round-headed attic dormers. A mansard-roofed stable of about 1874 survives with original surfaces and details, which is uncommon in Somerville. Realtor Ira Hill laid out Columbus and Warren Streets for house lots in 1870, and this was among the first houses built there. A. L. Lovejoy, a Boston dealer in fancy goods, probably lived here by 1874. Street rail and steam rail lines stopping in Union Square let residents like him commute to Boston. The house was listed for its architecture and its link to Somerville's growth after the Civil War.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a residence, as it was originally; condition rated excellent with no major alterations recorded.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.229404-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/7918/63791891/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001297.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001297/adb6e8aadd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001297/adb6e8aadd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tim Pierce","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A_L_Lovejoy_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Pierce</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A_L_Lovejoy_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791891","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._L._Lovejoy_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4648074"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/lovejoy-a-l-house-89001297/"}
