It stands on the northeast corner of Thurston and Evergreen.","why_significant":"The house is described as an exceptional example of Queen Anne architecture in Somerville, retaining much original exterior trim and interior plaster and tile detail. It was the first house built on its block of Thurston Street after the area was subdivided in the early 1880s. Its successive owners, a cabinetmaker and a restaurant owner, reflect the businessmen who moved into Winter Hill in the late 19th century.","narrative":"Built around 1883 at the corner of Thurston and Evergreen streets in Somerville's Winter Hill neighborhood, this Queen Anne style house was the first on its block of Thurston Street after local mustard and spice manufacturers subdivided the land in the early 1880s. The street later filled with Queen Anne and Colonial Revival houses built by speculators for Somerville businessmen. William R. Otis, a cabinetmaker, owned the property in 1884, and by 1897 it was the home of Charles B. Wyman, a restaurant owner. Although covered by two layers of siding, the house keeps much of its original decorative trim, including pressed and carved wooden ornament, foliated bargeboard and a second-story balcony on consoles. Its asymmetrical roofline with hooded dormers and varied windows is typical of the style. Inside, plaster cornices, ceiling medallions and Minton tile fireplace surrounds survive. It was listed for its architecture and its link to the area's late-19th-century development.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; condition rated fair/good, with no major alterations recorded and no outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.392436-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7918/63791835/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001289.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001289/54513af07f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001289/54513af07f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_OtisWymanHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_OtisWymanHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791835","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otis-Wyman_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7108750"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/otis-wyman-house-89001289/"}
