The form dates it ca. 1830 from map research in one place and ca. 1880 in the historical section; the architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is described as one of Somerville's few examples of Queen Anne style executed in brick. Its decorative detailing is well preserved, including inset terracotta string courses, polychrome arched window openings and punchwork bargeboarding. It is argued to meet Criterion C at the local level.","narrative":"Standing on the north slope of Prospect Hill in Somerville, this brick house is one of the few Queen Anne style buildings in the city built of brick rather than wood. Its decoration is well preserved. Bands of inset terracotta run as string courses across the walls, the arched window openings are picked out in contrasting colors, and the front gable is trimmed with punchwork bargeboarding. Prospect Hill Avenue was cut through from Munroe Street to Medford Street between 1874 and 1884, and the house was built around 1880 on a lot subdivided by W. H. Thompson. Brick houses were uncommon in the area at that time. The building has had no major alterations, has not been moved, and remains in good condition as a residence, with a 20th-century garage on the lot. Its intact design, materials and workmanship led to its recognition for architectural significance at the local level.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is stated as good, with no major alterations and not moved. A 20th-century garage is noted as a non-contributing outbuilding.
