It is a five-bay, clapboard-covered building with no known architect.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a rare, well-preserved example of early domestic Greek Revival architecture in East Somerville, built on a traditional five-bay center hall plan. It cites the colonnaded wrap-around portico with fluted Doric columns and the retained interior features. It also notes that it keeps integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.","narrative":"Built about 1840-1850 at 65-67 Perkins Street in East Somerville, this clapboard house is an early example of Greek Revival design in a vernacular form. It follows a traditional five-bay center hall plan, is two bays deep, and has a series of rear ells added in stages. Its most prominent feature is a colonnaded wrap-around portico with fluted Doric columns. Other details include flushboarding on the lower story, wide eaves, some surviving 6/6 movable sash windows, and full-length windows across the first-floor facade with the lower portions of exterior blinds still in place. Inside, gilded anthemion motifs on the lintels, high baseboards, plaster ceiling medallions and an ornate staircase survive. Gustavus Prescott, a Charlestown merchant, is the associated owner. Local tradition holds that it was built as a small inn, as was its twin at 69-71 Perkins Street. The two were known as The Ivaloo and The Hawthorne. It was listed for its architectural value and its good integrity.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; condition listed as excellent; some original 6/6 sash replaced with 2/2.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.931822-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/7909/63790926/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001278.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001278/9c34055008-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001278/9c34055008-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_GustavusGPrescottHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_GustavusGPrescottHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790926","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustavus_G._Prescott_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5621550"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/prescott-gustavus-g-house-89001278/"}
