It is also a well-detailed Colonial Revival building that retains integrity of location, design, materials, feeling and association. It is argued to meet Criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Near the top of Prospect Hill in Somerville, 82 Munroe Street holds the Grandview, a 3 1/2-story clapboard apartment building put up around 1896 to a design by Mark Leighton. It was built on speculation for Somerville alderman Elbridge G. Park and commands one of the most extensive views in the city. The main facade has a two-story entry porch with a broad entablature on Doric pillars, and a central gable with modillions and dentils that suggests a temple front. Three broad porches run across the rear. Some windows on the front were replaced with sliding glass units, but the form and ornament are otherwise intact. The building is notable as an example of the apartment-hotel, a type that grew in Somerville around the turn of the century; the 1900 City Directory listed 45 of them, most near public transportation. It is still used as apartments and is in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Mark Leighton","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Recorded in good condition, in use as apartments (six units), with some 20th-century window alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.529725-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/64/7915/63791564/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001275.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001275/9614bb628d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001275/9614bb628d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Grandview_Somerville_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Grandview_Somerville_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791564","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Grandview","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7737519"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/grandview-the-89001275/"}
