It retains integrity of location, design, materials, feeling, workmanship and association. It also predates the speculative development of Morrison Avenue in the 1870s.","narrative":"Half hidden behind a later house on the same lot, this brick dwelling at 197 Morrison Avenue in Somerville dates to about 1860, based on stylistic analysis. It rises 1 1/2 stories and has two bays, a full-width porch with Doric columns, medallions and a frieze, and a double entrance door with segmental-arched glass in the upper panels. Original details include a lancet window in the gable, cusped bargeboards and a floor-length window on the facade. It is considered the city's finest vernacular example of the picturesque Gothic Revival style. The house shares a ridge above the street with its neighbor at 201 Morrison Avenue, both set far back from the road. These houses somewhat predate the speculative building that filled Morrison Avenue in the 1870s. A side or wrap-around porch has been removed, but the house remains in good condition and is still used as a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; in use as a residence. A side or wrap-around porch has been removed, and an earlier 20th-century garage is noted as non-contributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.256477-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/52/7908/63790852/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001273.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001273/8800cc09fe-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001273/8800cc09fe-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_HouseAt197MorrisonAve.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_HouseAt197MorrisonAve.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790852","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_197_Morrison_Avenue","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914044"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-197-morrison-avenue-89001273/"}
