It is one of the better examples of the type left in Somerville and reflects the city's mid-19th century development. It was likely one of the most fashionable houses on Highland Avenue, then called Church Street.","narrative":"Built around 1850 on the north side of Highland Avenue in Somerville, this house is a center-gable Italianate dwelling with a three-bay center-entrance plan and a substantial rear ell. Its detail includes a trefoil window in the central gable, round-headed windows in the gable ends, high-profile bracketed window lintels, and carved brackets on the raking cornice of the center gable. A polygonal cupola with a belled finial crowns the roof. A side loggia with chamfered posts and hooded round-headed windows was added in the early 20th century during the Colonial Revival period. Highland Avenue was formerly Church Street, a main east-west route through the 19th century, and the house was probably one of its most fashionable residences of the period. Its first known resident, Samuel Gaut, was a baker who worked in Boston. The house is regarded as one of the better surviving center-gable Italianate buildings in the city and retains its integrity, so it was listed for its architecture at the local level.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; still in residential use, with no outbuildings and no move.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.857693-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/34/7910/63791034/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001265.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001265/f3b46f0d5f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001265/f3b46f0d5f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Myersj","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gaut_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Myersj</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gaut_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791034","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Gaut_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7411466"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/gaut-samuel-house-89001265/"}
