It was built by 1895 (dated ca. 1895) and designed by Loring & Phipps.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of the few architect-built Shingle Style houses in Somerville and one of the best conserved local examples. It is tied to architect George Loring, who designed and lived in it. It also represents late-19th-century development of substantial single-family homes on fashionable Highland Avenue. It is significant at the local level.","narrative":"Built by about 1895 at the corner of Highland Avenue and Putnam Street in Somerville's Central Hill area, this brick and shingle house was designed by architect George Loring for his own family. It sits on the remaining lot of the family's earlier Italianate house next door at 78 Highland Avenue. The house is organized under one large gable and massed as a simple rectangle, with a symmetrical, horizontally oriented facade. Broad chimneys and a steep shingled roof recall English medieval buildings. Other features include lattice-mullioned windows in the oriels, shed-roof dormers, and a recessed entrance flanked by projecting brick bays. Loring, born in Boston in 1851, formed a partnership with Sanford Phipps in 1889 and designed many buildings at Tufts University, public buildings in Somerville, and over 100 Somerville houses. The house is valued as a well-preserved Shingle Style design and as an example of the substantial single-family homes built on Highland Avenue in the late nineteenth century.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Loring & Phipps","architectural_style":"Shingle Style/Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good, with no major alterations, and the house is in residential use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.340425-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/9/7919/63791909/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001263.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001263/eb223c3050-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001263/eb223c3050-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Tim Pierce","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Somerville_MA_George_Loring_House_plaque.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Pierce</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Somerville_MA_George_Loring_House_plaque.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791909","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Loring_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5541832"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/loring-george-house-89001263/"}
