It is the only surviving portion of an important colonial and early national tavern. The nomination argues it keeps integrity of design, materials, workmanship and association, and meets Criterion C and Exception B at the local level.","narrative":"This 2 1/2-story wing at 81 Eustis Street in Somerville is all that remains of the Cooper-Davenport Tavern, which Jonathan Cooper built in 1757 at the junction of the Cambridge-Concord and Medford-Charlestown roads in northwest Cambridge. John Davenport acquired the tavern in 1806, soon after the Middlesex Turnpike opened along the same route, and refurbished it, adding the wing in a late Georgian-early Federal style. In the early 19th century the tavern was a well-known way station, famous for its \"flip,\" a popular drink. When the main building was razed in 1885 to make way for St. James Episcopal Church, the wing was moved to Somerville and has served as housing since. Later changes include replacement siding, a rear porch and 2/2 window sash. It is valued as one of Somerville's earliest standing structures and one of few Federal-period buildings left in the city.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal (described as late Georgian-early Federal)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is listed as poor; the building has been in residential use since it was moved, and is currently used as a residence/apartments.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.410653-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/55/7907/63790755/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001257.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001257/752779a7cc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001257/752779a7cc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_CooperDavenportTavernWing.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_CooperDavenportTavernWing.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790755","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooper-Davenport_Tavern_Wing","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5167732"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/cooper-davenport-tavern-wing-89001257/"}
