It is a three-bay Italianate dwelling with a projecting center pavilion, a panelled entrance door with a glazed transom and full sidelights, and a second-story Palladian window motif said to be original. Long double-hung sash at the first floor show lingering Greek Revival influence. An iron balcony was added at the Palladian window around 1900. The house is one of only a few early Italianate dwellings in Somerville built by 1850. It also illustrates how East Somerville grew after the Boston and Lowell railroad crossed the area in 1835, drawing Boston businessmen, and later laborers, to the neighborhood. The house is still residential and in good condition, though now covered with synthetic siding.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; present use residential; clapboard covered by synthetic siding; not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.245973-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/79/7917/63791779/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001253.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001253/6aae63e3aa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001253/6aae63e3aa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_CharlesWilliamsHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_CharlesWilliamsHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791779","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Williams_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5083605"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/williams-charles-house-89001253/"}
