It is a clapboard residence on a treed lot of less than an acre, moved back from its original North Street location in the early 20th century.","why_significant":"The form argues it is one of the few remaining farmhouses in western Somerville and a fine vernacular example of Greek Revival style. It is described as the only Greek Revival residence in its immediate vicinity. It also illustrates how a farming area was subdivided into house lots between 1884 and ca. 1910.","narrative":"This ca. 1850 farmhouse at 21 College Hill Road in West Somerville is a clapboard residence in the Greek Revival style. It is three bays wide and two bays deep, with an enclosed gable, an entablature and wide corner pilasters. A doorway pediment and a narrow board dividing the first and second stories were probably added in the late 19th century. The house now sits with its gable end to the street. Thomas Cook, a farmer, was one of about six landholders in the Curtis North-Broadway area. Small market-garden farms like his continued to be established into the 1860s, even after Tufts College was founded nearby in 1852. Between 1884 and about 1910 the area was subdivided for house lots, and the house was moved back from its original North Street location. Newly platted College Hill Road gave access, and the surrounding blocks filled with two- and three-family houses. It is valued as one of the few surviving farmhouses and Greek Revival houses in northwest Somerville.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as excellent, with no major alterations recorded.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.077955-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/24/7909/63790924/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001250.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001250/af0f695613-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001250/af0f695613-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_ThomasCookHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_ThomasCookHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790924","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Cook_House_(Somerville,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7788590"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/cook-thomas-house-89001250/"}
