No architect is named.","why_significant":"It is the only surviving residential dwelling in a section of Somerville cleared for an industrial park in the 1960s, and it represents the modest worker housing once common there. It also has unusual decorative trim for a standard three-bay, side-hall plan house. It retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship.","narrative":"Built around 1860, this Italianate house at 14 Chestnut Street, an extension of Joy Street in Somerville, is the last surviving dwelling in what was once a densely built neighborhood of modest housing for factory workers. Large-scale demolition in the 1960s cleared the area for an industrial park, leaving the house isolated among metal industrial buildings. It follows the standard three-bay, side-hall entrance plan, but its trim is unusual: double brackets carry the doorhood, and the paneled lower transoms feature punched floral designs. The brick foundation remains, while the original clapboard is now covered with asphalt brick siding, and the windows and doors have been altered. The area once held the Joseph Barrell House and McLean's Asylum and lay beside the Fitchburg and Boston and Maine railyards. The house was listed for its association with the area's development and for its architecture, and it is now used as offices.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is offices; condition described as fair; surrounded by industrial buildings and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.0477-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/63/7917/63791763/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001245.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001245/8e3ce39752-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001245/8e3ce39752-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_14ChestnutStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SomervilleMA_14ChestnutStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791763","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_14_Chestnut_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5913948"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-14-chestnut-street-89001245/"}
