Architect unknown.","why_significant":"It is argued to be significant under Criteria A and C at the local level. It is associated with Somerville's early-19th-century farming past and with Charles Adams, a state legislator and one of the first merchants at Boston's Quincy Market. It is also a well-preserved, finely detailed example of Greek Revival architecture.","narrative":"Built around 1840 on Winter Hill in Somerville, this Greek Revival house at 178 Central Street began as a farmhouse. Its builder, Charles Adams, was a farmer, animal husbandman and state legislator, and one of the original merchants at Boston's Quincy Market. His land once ran from Medford Street north to Broadway, and he gave the northern end for Winter Hill's first schoolhouse. The house is a three-bay, side-hall design with its gable end to the street. Notable features include a broad cornice entablature, wide corner boards, a full-width Doric porch with a roof railing added around 1910, and an offset entrance with full-length sidelights. Inside, most original doors, window and door enframements and moldings survive. It was one of the first non-agricultural houses on Winter Hill. A later resident, Woodbury Locke, worked as a cutter in Boston's leather and shoe business. The house is listed for its farm-era associations and its well-preserved architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by Charles Adams","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; present use is residential, the same as its original use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.859873-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/14/7915/63791514/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001240.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001240/781f7cfa6e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001240/781f7cfa6e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Adams_-Woodbury_Locke_House_Somerville_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Adams_-Woodbury_Locke_House_Somerville_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791514","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Adams-Woodbury_Locke_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5074967"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/adams-charles-woodbury-locke-house-89001240/"}
