Built in 1890-1891 to designs by the architectural firm Hartwell and Richardson, it is a Shingle Style building with multiple slate roofs of pyramidal, conical and gable forms, and walls of granite and shingle. Materials include local slate called Somerville Stone from Fitzgerald's Quarry for the square tower, blue Rutland marble for sills, copings and steps, and rough granite block for the corner tower. The congregation traces to a Sabbath School organized in 1863 and a congregation formed in 1865. After a split in 1881, the Winter Hill Congregational Society worshipped in a Gothic chapel built in 1871 before this church was constructed. The building is considered one of Somerville's finest architect-designed structures and one of its few Shingle Style institutional buildings. It has no major alterations, remains in good condition and is still used as a church.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Hartwell and Richardson (also referred to as Hartwell, Richardson, and Driver)","architectural_style":"Shingle Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed in good condition with no major alterations, no outbuildings, and not moved; present use is religious.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.663702-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/1/7919/63791901/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001238.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001238/f669e8cb6f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001238/f669e8cb6f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Broadway_Winter_Hill_Congregational_Church_Somerville_MA_03.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Broadway_Winter_Hill_Congregational_Church_Somerville_MA_03.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791901","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadway_Winter_Hill_Congregational_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4972539"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/broadway-winter-hill-congregational-church-89001238/"}
