It meets Criterion C at the local level. It is also one of several similar period houses on Benton Road and Hudson Street that may all be the work of the same builder.","narrative":"Built around 1890 at 81 Benton Road in Somerville, this 2 1/2 story house is a patternbook-inspired example of Queen Anne styling. It has a gabled roof and a full-height gabled polygonal bay offset to the left. The bay's roof projects slightly and rests on oversized consoles. A shed-roofed entrance porch features bulbous turned posts and an openwork frieze, and alternating bands of clapboard and shingle patterns enliven the facade. The house is recorded in excellent condition, with no major alterations and no outbuildings. It was built and occupied by Lemuel Snow Jr., a Somerville truant officer and the son of a local carpenter. Several similar houses on Benton Road and neighboring Hudson Street share its form and decorative vocabulary, and all may be his work. The house was listed for its architectural character, as an intact local example of the style that keeps its original location, design, materials and workmanship.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Lemuel Snow, builder","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Recorded in excellent condition, still used as a residence, with no major alterations, no outbuildings, and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.263364-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/7911/63791176/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001234.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001234/cbf41ff2d0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001234/cbf41ff2d0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lemuel_Snow_Jr_House,_Somerville_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lemuel_Snow_Jr_House,_Somerville_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791176","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemuel_Snow_Jr._House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6521580"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/snow-lemuel-jr-house-89001234/"}
