It sits on a corner lot on the north side of the street and also has a Centre Street address.","why_significant":"The house is described as one of the best preserved center-gable Italianate dwellings remaining in Somerville and retains its integrity. It is also linked to the mid-19th century development of the former \"Polly Swamp\" area, where it was one of the first houses built.","narrative":"Built around 1860, this clapboard house at 37 Albion Street in Somerville stands on a sizeable corner lot and is still used as a residence. It follows a three-bay, center-entrance plan with a substantial rear ell. Its Italianate details include a center gable with a trefoil window in the peak, round-headed windows in the gable-end peaks, high bracketed window lintels, and a raking cornice with carved brackets. A projecting open porch with squared columns and pilasters shelters the entrance. The house was among the first built in the \"Polly Swamp\" area, in a subdivision laid out by the Stearnes family, who owned the land. Albion Street was once called Forest Place. Frank G. Williams, the mid-19th century owner, worked in Boston and dealt in kitchen furnishings. A nearby house at 137 Highland Avenue has identical fenestration and bracketing, suggesting the same builder. The house was recognized as an excellent local example of its style, with no alterations recorded.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Residential use, in excellent condition, with no major alterations and no outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.325284-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/32/7910/63791032/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001226.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001226/f8055f9c55-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001226/f8055f9c55-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Myersj","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:F_G_Williams_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Myersj</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:F_G_Williams_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791032","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._G._Williams_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5423901"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/williams-f-g-house-89001226/"}
