It was the home and medical office of Dr. Madison Monroe Holland, and the listing includes a smokehouse, garage and cane boiler.","why_significant":"The house is a good small-town example of Queen Anne architecture, and one of the finest in the downtown Statesboro listing area. It is also tied to local medical history: Dr. Holland, one of the town's first doctors, treated patients overnight in the upstairs rooms because Bulloch County had no hospital.","narrative":"Dr. Madison Monroe Holland's house at 27 South Main Street in Statesboro began in 1888 as a one-story, four-bedroom residence. A second floor with six rooms and a balcony was added in 1908. Holland, one of the town's first doctors, kept his office in the turret room and cared for patients overnight upstairs, since Bulloch County had no hospital. The house is a Queen Anne design with asymmetrical massing, a wrap-around porch, a turret, a central balcony, weatherboard siding, turned balusters and a pressed-metal mansard roof. Interior mantels with beveled mirrors, wooden floors and some original hardware survive. Behind the house stand a cane boiler, a smokehouse and a garage, along with a sidewalk of colored hexagonal pavers, the only one of its kind left in Statesboro. The property was recognized for its architecture and for its role in the town's medical history between 1888 and 1914.","period_of_significance":"1888-1914","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Front rooms are used as an arts and crafts store, the rear section as an apartment, and the upstairs bedrooms for storage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.393437-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/89001157.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001157/38e11fb624-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001157/38e11fb624-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Madison_Monroe_Holland_House,_Statesboro,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Madison_Monroe_Holland_House,_Statesboro,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93205880","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Madison_Monroe_Holland_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30622034"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/bulloch-county/holland-dr-madison-monroe-house-89001157/"}
