A. Brannen. It has an L-shaped plan and a small noncontributing storage shed behind it.","why_significant":"The house is tied to James Alonzo Brannen, a lawyer who was Statesboro's first mayor and helped organize its newspapers, telephone company and bank. It is also a relatively intact small-town late Victorian residence. It is the oldest surviving residential building in the city and the only one representing homes built before the railroad and cotton boom of the late 1880s.","narrative":"Built in 1881 on South Main Street in downtown Statesboro, this single-story frame house follows an L-shaped plan common in late nineteenth-century Georgia towns. It has weatherboard siding, fish-scale shingles in the gables, a brick foundation and original two-over-two windows. A partially screened porch with tapered wood columns on brick piers was added around 1917. Inside, wood floors, tongue-and-groove ceilings, carved mantels and original coal grates survive. Lawyer James Alonzo Brannen (1858-1923) built the house two years after arriving in town and lived there throughout his career. He served as Statesboro's first mayor in 1889, represented Bulloch County in the legislature, organized two newspapers, and helped found the local telephone company and the Sea Island Bank. The house is the oldest surviving residence in the city and the only one representing homes built before the railroad and cotton industries arrived in the late 1880s. Its few alterations, including a 1950s bathroom addition, have not undermined its integrity.","period_of_significance":"1881-1938","architect_builder":"not known","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne (elements); L-shaped plan type","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling; the small storage shed behind it has deteriorated and is noncontributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.646275-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/89001154.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001154/2ecce543a2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001154/2ecce543a2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_102_S._Main_St_Statesboro,_GA,_U.S.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_102_S._Main_St_Statesboro,_GA,_U.S.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93205870","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Alonzo_Brannen_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30622037"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/bulloch-county/brannen-james-alonzo-house-89001154/"}
