Although fairly typical of the style locally, it stands out for its high integrity of design, materials and workmanship and for its finely crafted canopied entrance hood with carved brackets and balustrade.","narrative":"Built between 1870 and 1875 at 1950 Lake Avenue in Lima, this two-story frame house is a well-preserved example of Italianate residential design. It has cubic massing, a low hipped roof with broad overhanging eaves, paired scroll brackets and two-over-two windows with molded lintels and louvered shutters. Its most striking feature is the front entrance canopy, carried on ornately carved brackets with bell-shaped pendants, decorated with Swiss chalet style scalloping and topped by a pierced balustrade. Painter Charles Bristol had the house built on part of land his father, William, owned, within a farm first established by his grandfather Miles Bristol before 1800. Charles lost the house in 1890, and Simon Hickey bought it in 1894; his daughters, both dressmakers, lived there until 1938. Of roughly 100 Italianate-inspired buildings in Lima, few survive intact, and this house is distinguished by its integrity and the quality of its entrance details.","period_of_significance":"1870s","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is listed as good; the property remains in residential use, with a modern non-contributing garage behind the house.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.745594-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/89001135.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001135/df1125738f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001135/df1125738f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bristol_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bristol_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313385","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4968932"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/bristol-house-89001135/"}
