It reflects the picturesque Romantic tradition popularized by A.J. Downing. It is also tied to Harmon, Lima's most prominent master builder until his death in 1866.","narrative":"Built around 1851 on Genesee Street in Lima, New York, this one and one-half story cottage was designed and built by William Harmon as his own home. Harmon, an English-born master builder, came to Lima to construct Genesee College Hall and remained the village's most prominent builder until he died in 1866. The house has a cruciform plan, board-and-batten siding and a steeply pitched cross-gable roof. Its decoration includes scrolled vergeboards with trefoils and quatrefoils, Tudor-style hood moldings, bracketed porches with quatrefoil friezes, and a flying staircase inside. The setting on a wooded bluff follows the picturesque ideals of A.J. Downing. Board-and-batten Gothic Revival cottages are rare in western New York, and this one keeps a high degree of integrity in design, materials and craftsmanship. Alterations have been slight: a raised woodshed roof, an extended verandah roof and removed porch doors. The house was listed for its architectural importance at the local level.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1851","architect_builder":"William Harmon, master builder","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a private residence, as originally; condition listed as good, with no known threats.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.7099-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/89001130.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001130/63c0870ec8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001130/63c0870ec8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WILLIAM_HARMON_HOUSE,_LIVINGSTON_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313357","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Harmon_House_(Lima,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14707781"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/harmon-william-house-89001130/"}
