Its main block blends Federal and Greek Revival features, while the wings show Victorian-era design. The surviving nineteenth-century carriage barn adds to its importance.","narrative":"Set on a three-quarter-acre lot on East Main Street in Lima, this L-shaped frame house combines several building traditions. Believed to date from the 1830s, it was enlarged in the 1850s and 1860s. The two-story, three-bay, side-hall main block has clapboard siding, a cobblestone foundation, cornice returns and a louvered lunette in the front gable, all reflecting Federal influence. The recessed entrance with sidelights and transom, along with Doric columns on the side porch, reflects Greek Revival taste. The east wing, with broad eaves and floor-length windows, shows Victorian-era changes, probably made by William Vary after 1865. Earlier owners included Samuel Spencer, a local merchant and trustee of Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, who most likely built the main block. Inside, the woodwork and room layout remain largely intact. A nineteenth-century carriage barn behind the house survives nearly unchanged. The property was listed for its architectural value as a local example of transitional vernacular design.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1830s; late 1850s/1860s","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal and Greek Revival (main block), with Victorian-era wings","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Private residence in good condition on its original site; no threats known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.927572-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/89001124.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001124/57cb1b27c5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001124/57cb1b27c5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Spencer_House_Lima_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Spencer_House_Lima_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313373","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spencer_House_(Lima,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7576084"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/spencer-house-89001124/"}
